The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) has been in existence for more than 50 years. South Africa has a well-developed standards and conformity assessment infrastructure comparable with similar institutions all over the world.

The SABS publishes national standards, is extensively involved with international standards organizations, and is responsible for the administration of a large number of technical regulations.

The more than 60 laboratories and the system and product certification schemes have recently been corporatized, and now operate as separate companies.

To date, ca 5 000 standards have been published, and 200 of the total personnel of 1 500 are involved with standards.
